One person has reportedly died after being shot during a demonstration at Akooko located between Suhum and Kyebi in the Eastern region.
Police are yet to confirm the death but Joy News has learnt that five others were also shot during that same demonstration.
The residents embarked on demonstration Tuesday morning to register their displeasure against the presence of a fetish priest in the area.
The people claimed the fetish priest, Nana Saka, has been engaging in money rituals popularly known as Sakawa for people. They suspected him of using humans for the rituals.
Joy News’ Eastern Regional correspondent, Kofi Siaw reports that the demonstrators took the exercise to the shrine of the fetish priest and burnt down the place.
This, he was told, infuriated followers of the fetish priest who fired gunshots into the demonstrating crowd. Six of them were hit by what is believed to be live bullets and one died as a result.
The town folks, Kofi said, got incensed by the incident and marched to the residence of Nana Saka, the fetish priest, and set his car ablaze.
The angry people also torched his house including all his personal belonging. Many people are now fleeing the town
Meanwhile heavily armed police and military personnel have been deployed to the town to maintain order.
No arrests have so far been made.
