Essence of personal branding in music, a focus on Cape Coast artiste

Branding

In Cape Coast, most musicians believe that personal branding is taking a selfie at SamRit or Bejaya and posting it on your facebook and twitter pages. Others also see personal branding as attending every show and hanging out at every pub in town. Personal branding goes beyond cyberspace to include a personal representation on oneself.
“[Having a strong personal brand] is about projecting a strong consistent ‘personal brand’ image for [oneself] through the way [they] talk, the way [they] behave, [their] body talk and sartorial, and grooming skills, and then taking control of [their] visibility to manage [their] own PR,”. Personal branding therefore includes a representation of a personality through a variety of mediums.
Sometimes it’s very disheartening and embarrassing to see our “Local Champions” (Cape Coast Musicians) walk ‘aimlessly’ at Kotokoraba in an aged Kumasi made slippers with their pants below their waist-exposing their tattered ‘phose’ boxer short.
The last time around the Kakum Rural Bank (Kotokoraba) area, I saw one popular local champion fighting over a one cedi change with a Kubé (Coconut) seller. Someone should tell me how such an artiste would get to the lime light with this ‘I don’t care’ attitude.
If we really want to get recognition outside of Cape Coast, then I think we need to brand ourselves well. The handlers (If only all of them have handlers) of these musicians have great tasks ahead of them. We are sick and tired of seeing them every day in town. God help us all!!!!
